"Assisting" in the Healing Process
"I practiced "traditional" medicine for a long time but never felt I was doing enough for my patients," says Dr. Haimes of his early years as a physician. "The only tools we had available then were the drugs, which address the symptoms, not the causes of disease." Over the years, Dr. Haimes has learned to approach healing through more natural means. "I wanted to utilize methods to stimulate the body to manufacture it's own cure. Now I work with the non-toxic treatments that support the body's own healing process and balance body chemistry." Homeopathic medicine is another method of treatment gaining popularity. Homeopathy uses natural substances from three realms of nature to treat disease -animal, vegetable and mineral. A remedy formula is individually designed for each patient. Dr. Haimes non-drug-oriented approach has four component parts. "First we detoxify the body of internal and external pollutants," he explains. "Then we identify the specific weakness in the body and provide support for it. Third we neutralize anything that might be creating an imbalance, such as a particular food. Fourth, we build and support the immune system." Dr. Haimes doesn't hesitate to call on more traditional methods of treatment - such as the use of prescription drugs - if the situation calls for it. "I'm open to any solution that isn't harmful to my patient. So much of the healing process is mental. If my patient thinks something in particular is going to help, I'll go along with it." But like a growing number of his peers, he prefers to focus on wellness rather than disease. "In truth," Dr. Haimes emphasizes. "I am more interested in prevention than in treating the effects of disease." His recommendations for living a preventative lifestyle include some "old-fashion", common-sense advice: Avoid refined sugars and flours, caffeine and fat. Take alcohol in moderation. "Actually," he amends, "approaching everything in moderation is smart." Complete elimination of certain items leads to a feeling of deprivation and then overcompensation when the opportunity presents itself. "Additionally, exercise is an important factor in alleviating stress, controlling weight and overall good health," Dr. Haimes observes. "Find something you love to do - walking, dancing, riding a bike and make it pay off for you." Finally, in Dr. Haimes opinion, attitude is the definitive variable in determining health. "Whatever you do, don't hang on to negative thoughts and emotions," he says. "We can't avoid negativity in our lives but we can choose our reactions to it. And nothing will break down the immune system faster than a negative attitude." -Reprint from Boca Raton Magazine |
